Not so long ago, we learned that Micron was putting an end to its Crucial consumer brand, even though it was profitable. This inevitably fueled rumors about Samsung. Indeed, with the manufacturer converting NAND lines to produce memory used in the AI sector, some rightly assumed that the brand would abandon the consumer SSD sector. The Korean firm is now speaking out and denying these rumors!
Samsung says no, we’re not going to abandon the consumer SSD sector!
In response to rumors of a move away from the consumer SSD sector, Samsung has issued a press release to a colleague. The very short and succinct statement simply states that :
“The rumor about Samsung discontinuing SATA and other SSDs is false.”
The good thing about a press release like this is that you can’t go wrong with the interpretation. So it’s clear that the brand won’t be doing what Micron did with Crucial, and that’s rather good news. What’s more, some are taking this announcement as a good sign. Coupled with the announcement from Sapphire’s head of public relations, we can only hope that the delirium around RAM prices won’t last… At least, not until 2028, as recently communicated.
More generally, the situation we’re experiencing now, where 32GB DDR5 kits are being billed at over €400 compared with over €900 for some 64GB sets, is the result of strong demand from data centers. However, there will come a time when data centers will have completed their purchases, or at least will be sufficiently equipped for demand to slow down. At that point, we can expect prices to stabilize, or even start to fall. All the more so as some analysts are even talking of a bubble bursting. When that will be remains to be seen.
