As I flipped through channel after channel today evening, all I ended up seeing was one reality television show after another. America’s Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance, Survivor or some celebrity rehash of it whose name I cannot remember… There’s a whole lot of reality on TV! And honestly, not all of it feels very “real.” But that’s not what this post is about.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson ’s glimmering casket took center stage at the Staples Center , sitting for more than two hours as celebrities memorialized the King of Pop under the watchful eyes of millions. And when the ceremony was over, it was gone. By law, the golden casket that presumably held Jackson’s body should be exactly where his death certificate says it is: back at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills cemetery , the site of a private family memorial service held before the Staples ceremony.

The memorial was an astounding success, reminding us of the man behind the international celebrity. The funeral is over. The public’s curiosity as to MJ’s final resting place remains unsatisfied though – it has not been revealed. Perhaps it should be that way for now.

I find myself feeling at odds with what I see on the television. Murders in Oakland, all too common. They leave me with more of a profound sadness at the life many people are forced to experience than that “show” that was Michael Jackson’s memorial, complete with silver casket, even though his brain was still with the coroner and not present. I am annoyed that a celebrity singer is getting more exposure despite his flagrant lack of values in life than the many people who have suffered abuse that deserve to be recognized as survivors.
